Surveying a run you can't drive

Ditching chapter of the Ditch Assist app manual. The same text is in the app under Manual.

In the app Manual › Ditching › Surveying a run you can't drive

Sometimes you can't drive the whole centerline — a stretch is under water, blocked, or otherwise off-limits. Two tools let you survey it anyway. Both live under the Drive / Shots toggle at the top of the Survey sidebar.

Drive vs Shots

  • Drive (the default) records a point automatically every Survey Interval as you drive — the normal survey you already know.
  • Shots records one point each time you tap, at the exact spots you can reach. The app fills in the elevations between your shots with a straight line, so a few good shots can stand in for a stretch you can't drive.

You can switch between Drive and Shots at any time, even mid-recording.

Pause and resume (Drive mode)

Use this to skip an obstacle without ending the survey:

  1. Survey normally up to the obstacle.
  2. Tap Pause in the sidebar. The map badge reads Survey PAUSED and recording stops.
  3. Drive around the obstacle to the far side.
  4. Tap Resume. Recording continues from where you are now.

The gap you skipped is joined by a straight line and drawn dashed on both the map and the profile chart, so you can see at a glance that stretch was bridged, not measured. Your point count keeps climbing through the whole survey.

Shot mode

Use this when you can only reach a run in spots — for example along the far bank of a water-filled ditch:

  1. Tap Shots in the sidebar.
  2. Drive or walk to a station you can reach, hold still, and tap Log Point. A green message reads Point 3 logged.
  3. Repeat at each station you can reach. Elevations between your shots are filled in with a straight line and drawn dashed.

If there's no usable GPS fix when you tap, the shot is refused with No usable GPS fix — point not logged — wait for RTK and try again.

Grade Check — a quick two-point grade reading

While in Shot mode, tap Grade Check to read the grade between two points without recording anything. It's the digital version of a rod-and-level check between two spots.

  1. Stand at the first spot and tap Shoot A.
  2. Drive or walk along the run. The grade reads live as you move, labeled Downhill / Uphill / level, with the distance and elevation difference from A.
  3. Tap Shoot B to pin the result. The badge switches from LIVE to PINNED.
  4. Tap New Check to start over, or Close to exit.

Nothing from Grade Check is saved to your survey — it's a measuring tool only. (A positive grade means the ground falls from A to B, the normal drainage direction.)
