Leveling: grade a flat pad to one elevation

Set one target elevation in the bar at the bottom of the screen (typed, from where the blade sits now, or a depth below it), then grade the pad until the coverage is all green. Changing the target, and stopping and resuming a pad job.

  • Full Automation Kit
  • Guidance Only Kit
  • Ditch Assist Lite

In the app Home › Leveling › connect › bottom bar Target Elevation

Leveling grades a flat pad to one fixed elevation: a shed floor, an equipment yard, a bin site. There's no survey and no design. You set one target and the blade holds it everywhere you drive. With the Full Automation Kit the blade moves itself; with the Guidance Only Kit and Ditch Assist® Lite you work the lever to the guide.

Need the pad to drain? Use Simple Grading with a slope instead.

Leveling a pad. Some screens in the video may look slightly different from app v1.5.4; the steps below match the current app.

Before you start

Time: about 5 minutes to connect and set the target; the grading takes as long as the pad does.

  • The tablet is charged and on the control module's Wi-Fi (password 12345678), or on the receiver's own Wi-Fi with Ditch Assist Lite (Connect).
  • Your RTK base is set up and running.
  • You know how you'll set the target: a surveyed elevation, or "where the blade is now", or a depth below it.
  • Calibrated, if the target is a surveyed elevation or the pad takes more than one day (box below).

Set the target

Tap Leveling

On the Home screen, tap the Leveling card, the second card in the top row, with a picture of a flat brown pad.

Ditch Assist Home screen; the Leveling card is the second card in the top row, Flat Pad
  1. Leveling. Top row, middle.

Tap Connect

In the Leveling — Connect window, tap the big green Connect button at the top. To practise, tap Simulate, the second button. With Ditch Assist Lite the top button reads Emlid Reach.

Leveling — Connect window: a green Connect button, then Simulate and Bluetooth GPS 1 2
  1. Connect. Finds the control module.
  2. Simulate. Practice mode.

Tap Continue

Wait until the three System Check rows show green ticks, the last one RTK Fixed. Then tap the green Continue button.

System Check with three green ticks, the last reading RTK Fixed — 0.8 HDOP, and a green Continue button 1 2
  1. GPS Accuracy. Must read RTK Fixed.
  2. Continue. Opens the Leveling screen.

Find the target bar

There are no more choices: the Grade screen opens with a bar of boxes and buttons along the bottom. Start, in the column on the right, stays pale until a target is set. The orange Resume under it opens your saved jobs (below).

Set the target one of two ways: type a surveyed elevation (next two steps), or take it from where the blade is (Use Current, step 7).

Leveling Grade screen with no target: along the bottom, a Target Elevation (ft) box, Set Target, Use Current, a Depth Below Bucket (ft) box, Dig This Deep and Clear Offset; Start pale and Resume orange on the right
  1. Target bar. Target Elevation box, Set Target, Use Current.
  2. Start and Resume. Start is pale until there's a target.

Type the target elevation

Tap the Target Elevation (ft) box, bottom left ((m) in metric). A number keyboard opens. Type the pad elevation. It must come from the same survey or plan as your benchmark's elevation. Hide the keyboard with the tick key (typing and hiding the keyboard).

Leveling screen with the number keyboard open in the lower half; the Target Elevation (ft) box reads 808.2
  1. Target Elevation. 808.2 typed here.

Tap Set Target

Tap the green Set Target button, right of the box. The first time, a Name Job window opens (next step).

Target bar: the Target Elevation (ft) box reads 808.2, then a green Set Target button and a blue Use Current button 1
  1. Set Target. Applies the typed elevation.

Or: tap Use Current

No surveyed elevation? Put the cutting edge on the ground where the finished pad should be, then tap the blue Use Current button. It takes the GPS elevation (with the benchmark offset applied) and sets the target at once; no Set Target needed.

Use Current and Dig This Deep need a GPS fix: without one they're greyed out.

The same target bar; Use Current is the blue button on the right 1
  1. Use Current. Target = where the blade is now.

Type a name for the job

The first time you set a target, a window asks: Give this job a name so it is easy to find in Resume Job. The box holds the date and time. Tap it, clear it with the keyboard's delete key, and type the site name.

Name Job window: Give this job a name so it is easy to find in Resume Job. Job name Leveling 2026-10-16 22:07, buttons Skip and Save 1
  1. Job name. "Smith shed pad" is easier to find later.

Tap Save

Tap Save, bottom right of the window. Skip, beside it, keeps the date-and-time name.

The same Name Job window; Save is bottom right, right of Skip 1
  1. Save. Names the job.

Check the target

You should see Target (ft) in the top bar show your target, and the box at the bottom of the depth guide show how far the blade is from it. Start turns green, and an amber Change Target button appears on the right.

Leveling with a target set: Target 808.20 ft in the top bar, the depth readout +3.0 inches CUT, Start green and an amber Change Target on the right
  1. Target (ft). 808.20, the pad elevation.
  2. Depth readout. +3.0″ CUT: the blade is 3″ above the target.

Set the pad a depth below your anchor

The anchor is the elevation from your last Use Current or Set Target. Type a depth in Depth Below Bucket (ft) and tap Dig This Deep: the target becomes the anchor minus that depth. Tapping it again with another depth still measures from the same anchor; depths don't add up. With no anchor yet, the first Dig This Deep takes the blade's elevation right now as the anchor. Clear Offset empties the depth and puts the target back on the anchor. The depth you typed is remembered for the next job.

Example: blade on the existing ground, Use Current (807.39), depth 0.5, Dig This Deep: target 806.89, half a foot below where you started.

Type a depth

Tap the Depth Below Bucket (ft) box, in the middle of the bar along the bottom, and type the depth, for example 0.5 for half a foot.

The Depth Below Bucket (ft) box reading 0.5, next to an orange Dig This Deep button 1
  1. Depth Below Bucket. 0.5 ft typed.

Tap Dig This Deep

Tap the orange Dig This Deep button, right of the box. The target becomes the anchor minus that depth.

The same part of the bar; Dig This Deep is the orange button 1
  1. Dig This Deep. Target = anchor − depth.

Check the new target

You should see the Target Elevation box show the new target, for example 806.89. A Clear Offset button under it, now orange, puts the target back on the anchor.

After Dig This Deep: the Target Elevation box reads 806.89, the depth box 0.5, and an orange Clear Offset button sits under the target box
  1. Target and Clear Offset. 806.89, half a foot below the anchor.

If a depth is still in the box when you tap Use Current, the app asks Apply Depth Offset?. Tap Apply Offset (bottom right) for a new anchor here with the target that depth below it. Tap Use Current Only, beside it, for a target right here; the depth is cleared.

Apply Depth Offset? window: Depth Below Bucket is set to 0.5 ft. Apply that offset to the new current bucket elevation, or use the current elevation as the target and clear the offset? Buttons Cancel, Use Current Only, Apply Offset
  1. Use Current Only and Apply Offset. Bottom right of the window.

Grade the pad

Tap Start

Lower the blade to the ground, then tap the green Start button, second from the top on the right.

If the Elevation Mismatch Check is on in Settings (it's off to start with), Start warns when the target is far from the ground under you: usually a stale benchmark or a typo (Alerts and safety settings).

Leveling with a target set; the green Start button is second from the top on the right
  1. Start. Green once a target is set.

Cut the high spots, fill the low ones

You should see a red Auto Grading Active banner at the top of the depth guide. With Ditch Assist Lite you get guidance only. The box at the bottom of the guide shows how far the cutting edge is from the target: CUT means you're above it, FILL below.

Carry soil from the cuts to the fills. Behind the machine, a trace paints every cell the blade passes: green within 1″ of the target; yellow, orange and red for one, two and three or more passes of cutting left; blue more than 1″ too low. Keep going until the pad is all green. The coverage saves with the job.

Leveling while grading: a red Auto Grading Active banner, a green coverage trace behind the machine, and the depth readout 0.0 ON GRADE
  1. Auto Grading Active. The blade is holding the target.
  2. Depth readout. ON GRADE here.

Tap the depth guide to fold it into a thin GRADE rail when you want more map; tap again to open it. More: Grade / Depth guide.

Nudge the target if you need to

Each tap of Nudge Up or Nudge Down, the blue buttons on the right, moves the working target 2″, for example to leave the pad a little high for compaction. The number between them shows the nudge. Set it back to 0″ for the finish pass. Leveling has no Auto-Nudge.

Leveling after two Nudge Down taps: the nudge between the Nudge buttons reads -4.0 inches, a blue CURRENT line on the depth guide, and Current Tgt and Final Tgt in the readout
  1. The nudge. −4.0″ after two taps of Nudge Down.
  2. Current Tgt and Final Tgt. The nudged target and the level you set.

Tap Hold to pause

Tap the grey Hold button, under Stop, to stop blade commands without leaving grading. It turns into an orange Resume: tap it to carry on. Ditch Assist Lite has no Hold: tap Stop instead.

Raise and Lower, the green and red buttons lower down, move the implement while you hold them down, with a control module and valve connected.

Leveling while grading; Hold is the grey button under the red Stop on the right
  1. Hold. Grey, under Stop.

Tap Stop when the pad is done

Tap the red Stop button at the top of the column. The job saves itself with the target, nudge and coverage.

Leveling while grading; the red Stop button is at the top of the right-hand column, under Home
  1. Stop. Ends grading and saves the job.

Change the target

Tap Change Target

Tap the amber Change Target button on the right, under Hold (under Reset when you're not grading). Grading stops and the target clears.

Leveling while grading; the amber Change Target button is under Hold on the right
  1. Change Target. Amber.

Set the new target

You should see Start turn pale and the target bar come back. The box still holds the old target, and the nudge is kept. Edit the number and tap Set Target (or use Use Current or Dig This Deep). Check the nudge, then tap Start.

After Change Target: Target -- in the top bar, the nudge -4.0 inches kept, Start pale, and the target bar back with 807.45 still in the box
  1. Old target. Edit it and tap Set Target.
  2. Nudge. Kept (−4.0″ here). Set it back if you don't want it.

A pad with a step (two levels): level one part, Stop, change the target, level the other. Use a separate job for each level if you want separate coverage.

Stop and resume a pad job

Tap Resume

Open Leveling and connect (steps 1 to 3 above). With no job running, tap the orange Resume button on the right, under Start. A window called Resume Job opens.

If the Leveling card on Home shows ACTIVE, tapping it asks Start New Session? first. Start New clears the screen, not your saved jobs.

Leveling screen with no target; the orange Resume button is under the pale Start on the right
  1. Resume. Orange, under Start.

Tap Resume on your job

The list shows jobs from every workflow, newest first. Find the one marked (Leveling) and tap its orange Resume button. It restores the target, nudge and coverage.

Resume Job list: Leveling 2026-10-16 22:07 (Leveling), saved Fri Oct 16 10:12 PM, Nudge -4, 336 cells, with an orange Resume button; below it a Contour Tiling job
  1. Resume. On the Leveling job's row.
  2. Your Leveling job. Name and when it was saved.

Tap Calibrate on a new day

Resuming asks Calibrate GPS?. Its tip about a zero cut/fill spot is generic: use your site benchmark. On a new day, tap Calibrate and calibrate to the site benchmark, never on the pad you've already cut. Same day, same base setup: tap Skip.

Resumed Leveling job with the Calibrate GPS? window on top: Skip and an orange Calibrate button
  1. Skip and Calibrate. Calibrate on another day, or after the base moved.

Check the target, then tap Start

Check the target in the top bar and the nudge are what you expect. Then lower the blade and tap the green Start.

Leveling with a target set: Target 808.20 ft in the top bar and the green Start button on the right
  1. Target (ft). The saved target.
  2. Start. Carries on grading.

More on saved jobs: Save and resume jobs.

Reading the Grade / Depth Guide The guide column as the app draws it in the light display mode. 1: the tip of the black triangle is the cutting edge of your blade or bucket. 2: the blue CURRENT line is the target for this pass; it only shows when Nudge or Auto-Nudge moves the target off final grade. 3: the black and yellow FINAL TARGET band is the design grade. 4: the readout gives how far the blade is from the target named on top, here Current Tgt plus 2.0 inches, CUT, then the elevations Current 805.50, Current Tgt 805.33 and Final Tgt 805.00. 5: tap the readout and it measures to Final Tgt instead: plus 6.0 inches, CUT. Reading the depth guide CUT CURRENT FINAL TARGET FILL Current Tgt +2.0" CUT Current Current Tgt Final Tgt 805.50 805.33 805.00 1 2 3 4 5 Cutting edge This pass Final grade How far off Tap it Final Tgt +6.0" CUT
Work the tip of the triangle to the yellow FINAL band, or to the blue CURRENT line while a nudge is set. The readout gives the error in inches (or cm).
  1. Cutting edge. The tip of the triangle is your blade's cutting edge.
  2. CURRENT. The target with your nudge on it. It only shows while a nudge is set.
  3. FINAL TARGET. The level you set.
  4. How far off. From the blade to the target named on top. + means above it: cut more. − means below it. Green when close, amber to red when far above, blue below.
  5. Tap it. While there's a CURRENT line, a tap switches the readout to Final Tgt, the distance to the level you set (red while there's cut left). Tap again to switch back.

On each kit

  • Full Automation Kit: the blade holds the target automatically.
  • Guidance Only Kit and Ditch Assist Lite: the same screen, but you move the implement to the guide.
  • DIG™ Kit (excavators): use Dig Level Area in Excavation, which has the same target bar.

If something goes wrong

  • Start stays grey: no target yet. Set one in the bottom bar. Use Current and Dig This Deep grey: no GPS fix yet.
  • The pad is an inch or two off the planned elevation: the benchmark is off, or the target came from a different survey or plan than the benchmark. Grade is off.
  • The guide shows a big error with the blade on the ground: the benchmark is off, or the typed target came from a different survey or plan than your benchmark. (Blade height doesn't affect Leveling.) Grade is off.
  • The field shows an old value after resuming: it's the saved target. Change it with Change Target or Use Current.
  • Hold banners you didn't tap: Hold banners.
  • The blade won't move: Implement won't move.
