Dig to a set grade (Enter Grade Only)
Type a grade and direction (0% for level) and an optional depth, name the job, put the bucket where the dig starts and tap START: that spot becomes 0+00. Dig to the chevrons and the CUT/FILL label, nudge the target 2 in at a time, and use Change Grade for the next leg.
- DIG™ Kit
- Ditch Assist Lite
In the app Home › Excavation › Enter Grade Only
Enter Grade Only digs a straight grade from wherever you start, with no survey and no design: a footing at 0%, a culvert bed, a tile trench at a known fall. You type the grade and direction; the spot where the bucket sits when you tap START becomes the 0+00 reference, and the target rises or falls from there.
It's the same Set Grade bar as Manual Grade, without any valve commands.
Before you start
- Connected to the DIG™ module (Connect), or a Reach in Ditch Assist Lite (check between cuts)
- RTK Fixed
- The direction the trench runs and the grade it needs
Time: about 2 minutes to set the grade, then the digging.
Tap Enter Grade Only
Open Excavation and connect (Open Excavation). Under How would you like to grade?
, Enter Grade Only is the fourth wide button (No survey — enter a fixed grade manually
). Tap it.
- Enter Grade Only. Fourth button down.
The dig screen opens with the Set Grade bar across the bottom of the map. Start stays grey until a grade is set.
Type the grade
Tap the Target Grade % box, at the left end of the bar, and type the grade (typing on the tablet). It takes digits and a decimal point; 0 is fine for level.
- Target Grade %. Left end of the bar.
Tap Uphill or Downhill
Next to the grade box, tap Uphill or Downhill: the way the bottom runs as you work away from the start. The one you pick turns dark red.
- Uphill / Downhill. Which way the trench bottom runs.
Type the depth (if you need one)
Tap the Depth Offset (in) box and type how far below the starting point the bottom goes. Leave it blank for 0. Only digits and a decimal point type (no minus sign).
- Depth Offset (in). 24″ here.
Tap Set Grade
Set Grade is the green button at the right end of the bar. Tap it. It stays grey while the grade box is empty or either box holds something that isn't a number. Once a grade is set, the button reads Apply.
- Set Grade. Right end of the bar.
Tap Save to name the job
The first time you set a grade, a window called Name Job asks for a name: Give this job a name so it is easy to find in Resume Job.
The box is filled in with "Excavator Grade" and the date and time. Type your own name if you like, then tap Save, the green button at the bottom right. Skip leaves the job unnamed, and Resume Job then lists it only as "Excavator".
1
- Job name. What you'll see in Resume Job (this picture is from a level-area job).
- Save. Keeps the name.
Tap Start
Start is the big green button at the top of the right-hand column. Tap it. A window called Ready to Start? opens.
- Start. Top of the right-hand column.
Put the bucket at the start, then tap START
The window shows the grade and direction (0.00% Downhill
). With it still open, put the cutting edge where the dig begins: on the ground for a 0+00 at grade, or at the depth you want. Then tap START, the dark-green button at the bottom right. That spot is locked as 0+00.
- START. Locks the bucket's position as 0+00.
- 0.00% Downhill. Check the grade and direction.
The window says "blade"; on an excavator it's the bucket's cutting edge. With Ditch Assist Lite, set the start with the stick and bucket in your check pose.
Dig to the chevrons
Down chevrons and a red CUT label: go deeper. Up chevrons and blue FILL: you're below the bottom. ON GRADE means within ±1.5″. The map labels the leg (S1 · 0.00%
) with a 0+00 flag at the start, and the profile turns green where you've reached grade.
- S1 · 0.00% and 0+00. The leg, and where it starts.
- ON GRADE. Turns into CUT or FILL, with the inches, when you're off.
Tap Nudge Up or Nudge Down if you need to
The blue Nudge Up and Nudge Down buttons in the right-hand column move the working target by the Nudge Sensitivity setting (2″ to start) per tap, for a soft spot you'll come back to. The total shows between the buttons, a cyan CURRENT line appears on the gauge, and the readout lists Current, Current Tgt and Final Tgt. Tap the readout to switch which one the big number uses.
- Nudge Up. Nudge Down is under it; the total between them.
- CURRENT. The nudged target on the gauge.
For the next leg, tap Change Grade
Stop saves the job and leaves the leg open: Start again picks up against the same 0+00. To dig a new grade, tap Change Grade, the yellow button under Stop. It closes the leg and the Set Grade bar comes back.
- Change Grade. Under Stop.
Edit the bar and tap Apply
Change the grade, direction or depth in the bar, then tap the green Apply button at its right end. Put the bucket at the new start and tap Start, then START in Ready to Start?, as before. The chart keeps every leg.
- Apply. Sets the new leg's grade.
Each leg remembers its own depth offset, and they're all saved with the job. Pick it up later from Resume Job (Resume, Reset and settings).
If something goes wrong
- Set Grade stays grey: type a grade (0 is allowed) and only digits in the depth box.
- Depth reads a few inches off at the bucket: depth off at the bucket.
- Gauge empty or chevrons frozen: gauge empty, DIG drops.
- Amber banner about accuracy: excavation accuracy banner.
