Survey won't record, or the design comes out wrong

Start Survey is greyed out, points aren't logged, the trail has gaps, Slope-IQ says Not enough survey data, the design sits above the ground or drains the wrong way, or Auto-Nudge won't show.

In the app Survey tab › START SURVEY; Slope-IQ

Survey points are only logged on a fresh RTK Fixed position (with RTK Filter on, the default). Most "survey won't record" calls are a fix problem; most "design looks wrong" calls are a blade height, outlet or Depth Offset problem. The pre-survey card tells you why Start is off.

Before you start

  • The tablet is connected and the GPS badge shows a green RTK (RTK Fixed, the most accurate GPS position).
  • For design problems, have the design window open: the Slope-IQ Design window, with the chart and the row of cards along the bottom.

Time: 1 to 5 minutes for most of these.

Quick checks first

  • The GPS badge is a green RTK and the card before the survey shows RTK: Stable.
  • Blade height is set: no orange Blade Ht 0 — antenna level chip on the map.
  • In the design window, check the outlet button and Depth Offset before you tap Implement Slope.
The Ready to Survey card in the middle of the survey screen: green ticks for Connected, GPS: RTK and RTK: Stable, the line Drive to the start of your drain route, a big green START SURVEY button and Skip guided flow under it. 1 2
  1. The three rows. Connected, the GPS fix and RTK steadiness. A red or amber row is why Start is off.
  2. START SURVEY. Grey until the tablet is connected and on a fresh RTK Fixed.

Find your symptom

Tap the line that matches what you see. It opens with the causes, most likely first. Check tells you how to spot the cause. Fix tells you what to do, one step at a time.

START SURVEY is greyed out

No RTK Fixed yet Most likely

Check: The card reads GPS: FLOAT (or DGPS, GPS), or RTK: Unstable.

Fix: Wait for RTK Fixed. If it doesn't come, see Stuck on Float.

The receiver reports RTK as DGPS

Check: An amber line under START SURVEY says RTK Filter is ON and this receiver reports DGPS. Turn off RTK Filter (Settings > Survey) to survey with it. Tap here to open Settings.

Fix: Only for receivers that label a true RTK fix as DGPS (John Deere StarFire SF-RTK): see DGPS instead of RTK.

No GPS, or the feed stopped

Check: The card shows GPS: STALE — position not updating or GPS position has not updated for Ns. Check the receiver, or drive a few feet.

Fix: See No GPS in the app.

Field Survey or Levee: no benchmark yet

Check: A window says Drop a benchmark first.

Fix:

  1. Park on something you can find again, such as a gate corner or a culvert end.
  2. Tap Drop Benchmark Here, the green button at the bottom right of the window.
  3. Keep the machine still while it averages (5 seconds).
  4. Tap Start in the sidebar.
The two buttons at the bottom of the Drop a benchmark first window: Not yet, and a green Drop Benchmark Here button.
  1. Drop Benchmark Here. Saves where you're parked as this survey's benchmark.
Recording, but points aren't logged“Waiting for RTK fix — recording paused”

In Shots mode: No usable GPS fix — point not logged. In Field Survey: Waiting for an accurate RTK fix — point not logged.

The fix dropped below RTK Fixed Most likely

Check: The GPS badge isn't a green RTK any more. The RTK Filter paused logging; it starts again by itself when the fix is steady.

Fix:

  1. Stop, or slow right down, and wait for the badge to turn green RTK.
  2. Check the base and the correction link.
  3. Keep away from trees and buildings while surveying.

You're driving slower than the recording interval

Check: Points come slowly when you crawl. Recording Interval (first row of the SURVEY box in Settings, default 10 ft) is the minimum distance between points.

Fix: Keep moving, or shorten Recording Interval: tap the number on its row and type a smaller one (1 ft at least).

The survey trail has gaps

RTK dropped on those stretches

Check: The gaps line up with where the GPS badge left green.

Fix: Drive back over them with RTK Fixed. In route surveys, short gaps are joined with a straight dashed line; check the dashed stretch looks right on the profile before designing.

Field Survey won't save, or won't let you leave“Fewer than 10 points — keep driving or Cancel.”

Not enough points

Fix: A field survey needs at least 10 points. Tap Start and keep driving. Or tap Cancel to leave without saving.

Leaving would lose the survey

Check: The app says Finish field survey first, or asks Discard N unsaved points? when you tap Cancel.

Fix: Tap Finish & Save (or Stop) to keep the survey. Cancel never saves.

The save itself failed

Check: The app says Save failed: … (route survey) or Failed to save survey to disk (Levee).

Fix: Tap Save again. If it still fails, check free storage and the storage permission: see Files won't save.

Slope-IQ shows no design“Not enough survey data”

Simple Grading says No survey data available. Record a survey first. The Grade screen shows No Slope-IQ Design Loaded until you implement one.

The survey has fewer than 2 points Most likely

Check: Read Points, the second number in the bar across the top of the survey screen.

Fix: Record a longer survey. Or tap Load in the sidebar and pick a saved one.

The RTK Filter dropped every point

Check: Points stayed at 0 while you drove.

Fix: See points aren't logged.

The design line sits above the ground

Depth Offset is negative or wrong Most likely

Check:

  1. Open the design window: tap Slope-IQ in the sidebar of the survey screen.
  2. Read DEPTH OFFSET, the first card along the bottom of the window.
Slope-IQ Design window: an Outlet: Reversed button at the top right, the BestFit, Guided and Freeform tabs, a profile chart, and a row of cards along the bottom: DEPTH OFFSET 6.0 inches, MIN GRADE 0.10%, BOTTOM WIDTH, SIDE SLOPE, MIN DEPTH and MAX DEPTH, each with minus and plus buttons.
  1. DEPTH OFFSET. Lowers the design line below the surveyed ground by this much. Tap + or −, or tap the number to type it.

Fix:

  1. Tap + under DEPTH OFFSET until the value is right, or tap the number and type it.
  2. Look at the chart: the orange design line should now sit below the dashed terrain line.
  3. Tap Implement Slope, the green button at the bottom right.

The outlet is at the wrong end

Fix: See wrong outlet below.

Blade height was wrong when you surveyed

Check: The whole terrain line is shifted. See Grade looks off on your own survey.

The design drains the wrong way“Outlet: Auto”

Auto outlet picked the wrong end

Check: The app takes the low end of the survey as the outlet. Flat ground can fool it.

Fix:

  1. In the design window, find the button at the top right that reads Outlet: Auto.
  2. Tap it once. It turns orange and reads Outlet: Reversed, and the design line flips to drain the other way.
  3. Check the chart, then tap Implement Slope.
Slope-IQ Design window with the Outlet: Reversed button highlighted in orange at the top right, next to OUTLET DEPTH: OFF.
  1. Outlet: Reversed. After one tap on Outlet: Auto. Tap again to go back to Auto.

In Terracing the button reads Reversed or Auto Flow. In the guided setup before the design, answer the water-flow question carefully.

The ditch design goes past Min or Max Depth

Ditch depth limits are shading only

Check: The chart shades the stretch red as Over Max but doesn't move the line.

Fix, any of these:

  • Change DEPTH OFFSET or MIN GRADE % with the + and − buttons.
  • Use a fixed outlet depth: tap OUTLET DEPTH at the top (BestFit only).
  • Draw the line yourself: tap the Guided or Freeform tab.

Tiling is different: it enforces a hard depth window.

After Edit Design your coverage and pass count were cleared

You chose Start Fresh Job

Check: When you implement a revised design on a job with progress, the app asks Apply Revised Design? with two choices.

Apply Revised Design? window: two big choices, Start Fresh Job (clear grading progress, coverage map, pass number and nudge) and Keep My Progress (apply the new target to the open job, keeping the worked surface and coverage), and a Cancel button. 1 2
  1. Start Fresh Job. Clears progress, coverage, pass number and nudge.
  2. Keep My Progress. Keeps the worked surface and coverage. Usually the one you want.

Fix: Next time, tap Keep My Progress to keep the worked surface and coverage. Old designs and jobs stay on the tablet, so an earlier job can still be reopened. A design saved under a name that already exists gets V2, V3 so nothing is overwritten.

No Auto-Nudge prompt, or no Pass + / Pass − buttons

Auto Nudge is off Most likely

Check: Look at the Auto Nudge switch in the top bar of the grade screen, next to the GPS badge.

The right end of the grade screen's top bar: the GPS badge RTK 22, the words Auto Nudge with a green switch (on), the Wi-Fi icon, BM and the wrench.
  1. Auto Nudge switch. Green is on. Tap it to switch.

Fix: Tap the switch so it turns green. With it on, Pass + and Pass − replace Nudge Up and Nudge Down in the sidebar; you get one pair or the other. The same switch is in the GRADING box of Settings.

Tiling and Excavation don't use Auto-Nudge

Fix: They're single pass by design. Use Nudge Up and Nudge Down.

Forming with a plain XYZ file

Fix: No proposed elevations means no cut/fill and no Auto-Nudge. Use an XYZP or AGD file. See Land Forming problems.

Auto-Nudge wants too many passes

Passes = deepest cut ÷ Max Cut Per Pass

Check: Read Est. Passes in the green box on the design summary bar, under the cards. Max Cut Per Pass starts at 2 in.

Slope-IQ Design window. In the summary bar under the cards, a green box reads Est. Passes: 47 @ 2 inches per pass.
  1. Est. Passes. Deepest cut divided by the cut per pass. Here 47 passes at 2 in each.

Fix: raise the cut per pass before you implement (3 to 4 in suits loose soil):

  1. Tap Implement Slope. The Auto-Nudge window opens.
  2. Set a bigger max cut per pass there with its + button.
  3. Tap Enable Auto-Nudge.

To change the starting value for every job, set Max Cut Depth (in) in the GRADING box of Settings.
