The Ditch Assist® app is installed from ditchassist.com/app.html, not Google Play. Android treats that as an "unknown source" and asks you to allow it once. The app runs on Android 7.0 or newer; the Samsung Galaxy Tab A11+ supplied with kits is the recommended tablet.
Before you start
- The tablet on internet: farm Wi-Fi or a phone hotspot, not the module Wi-Fi (Wi-Fi on the tablet).
- The tablet charged or plugged in.
- Know how to open the tablet's Settings app (how) and go back (how).
Time: 5 to 10 minutes to download and install.
Quick checks first
- The tablet is on internet (farm Wi-Fi or a hotspot, not the module Wi-Fi) and you downloaded the production build from ditchassist.com/app.html.
- When Android asks, you allowed installs from that source (your browser or My Files).
- Coming from an Alpha 2.x, v1.0 or v1.1 build: uninstall the old app first.
Find your symptom
Tap the line that matches what you see. It opens with the causes, most likely first. Check tells you how to spot the cause. Fix tells you what to do, one step at a time.
Android blocks the install“For your security, your tablet is not allowed to install unknown apps from this source” (Android's wording varies)
Installs from the browser aren't allowed yet Most likely
Fix:
- On the Android message, tap Settings.
- Turn on the Allow from this source switch. It turns blue.
- Go back (how). You should see the install prompt again.
- Tap Install. Android's wording varies a little between tablets (installing an app file). Pictures of each step: Install the app.
Android says the app wasn't installed“App not installed”
An old Alpha 2.x, v1.0 or v1.1 build is on the tablet Most likely
Check: Open Ditch Assist and read the version at the bottom of the Home screen. Those builds were signed differently, so the new app can't install over them.

Fix:
- Go to the tablet's Apps screen (how) and find the Ditch Assist icon.
- Press and hold the icon (long press) until a menu pops up.
- Tap Uninstall (lens 1). Android asks if you want to uninstall the app.
- Tap OK. The Ditch Assist icon disappears.
- Install the new app from ditchassist.com/app.html.
- Enter your settings and calibrate to your benchmark again. Saved surveys, designs and jobs stay on the tablet; settings and the benchmark calibration don't.
- Uninstall. In the menu that pops up when you hold the icon.
An older 32-bit tablet
Fix:
- On the tablet, open ditchassist.com/app.html.
- Download the older tablets build instead of the main one.
- Install it. Expect slower maps and LiDAR; a newer tablet may be needed.
Android older than 7.0
Check:
- Open the tablet's Settings app (how).
- Scroll to the bottom and tap About tablet.
- Tap Software information.
- Read the Android version number.
Fix: Below 7.0: use a newer tablet.
Not enough storage
Fix:
- Delete photos, videos or apps you don't need.
- Install again.
How do I update, and will I lose my settings?
Install the new build over the top
Check: Your version is at the bottom of Home (picture above), and in the ABOUT box near the bottom of Settings.
1- Version. The app version and build date.
Fix:
- Put the tablet on internet.
- Open ditchassist.com/app.html in the tablet's browser, or scan the QR code on that page with the tablet's camera.
- Download the production build.
- When the download finishes, tap it. Android asks if you want to install (or update) the app.
- Tap Install (or Update).
- Open Ditch Assist. You should see the new version at the bottom of Home. From v1.2 or later it updates in place and keeps settings, calibration and saved work.
A new version gives trouble on your setup
Fix:
- Send your logs first, so support can see what happened.
- On ditchassist.com/app.html, open Previous versions and install the earlier version.
- Call support.
It keeps asking for file access, or opens Android settings at launch“All files access”
The app needs to save under Documents/DitchAssist
Fix:
- On the All files access page that opens, check it shows Ditch Assist in the middle.
- Tap the switch at the right of Allow access to manage all files (lenses below). It turns blue.
- Tap the back arrow at the top left (how to go back). You should be back in Ditch Assist, and it stops asking.
- Allow access to manage all files. The row to turn on.
- The switch. Blue means on.
If you refuse, the app still runs but saves to private storage that's erased if the app is uninstalled, files saved earlier in Documents/DitchAssist seem to vanish, and LiDAR & Mapping can't open or save fields (see LiDAR fields missing). To turn it on later, follow Files won't save.
The red safety warning shows every time“I Accept All Risk & Liability”
By design
The safety warning shows on every launch. That's on purpose; nothing is wrong.
Fix:
- Read the warning.
- Tap I Accept All Risk & Liability, the wide red button at the bottom. You should see the Home screen.

The Operator's Manual notice (I Agree to Read the Manual Before Use) shows only once. The Reset button on Reset Startup Warnings, in the ABOUT box of Settings (picture above), brings it back.
It keeps asking for blade height“Set Blade Height” · “Auto Measure requires a controller connection for RTK GPS data.”
Blade height was never set
Check: Skip only lasts for that session.
1
2- Enter Manually. If you know the height.
- Auto Measure. Needs a connection and RTK.
Fix: Set it once and the prompt stops.
- If you know the height: tap Enter Manually, type it on the keypad and save.
- If you don't: tap Auto Measure. It needs a connection and RTK; if you're not connected, the Connect First step walks you through connecting.
- Follow the raise and lower steps on screen. Full steps with pictures: Set blade height.
A feature or setting from the manual isn't there
An old app version Most likely
Fix:
Ditch Assist Lite hides hydraulic settings
Check: An orange LITE MODE banner on Home. CONTROLLER, DIG Module Firmware, Pre-Start Safety, Rock Hit Detection and Send Commands are hidden in Lite mode.
Fix: Expected. Switch to Ditch Assist only if you have a control module or DIG:
- On Home, tap Settings, the fourth button down the right-hand column.
- In the Mode box at the top, tap Ditch Assist.
- In the box that asks
Switch mode?
, tap Switch.
Some rows only show while connected
Fix: The Connection row (with Disconnect) in the CONTROLLER box of Settings only appears while connected, and Apply stays greyed out until a control module is connected. The Wi-Fi Signal and Link Speed rows in Pre-Flight Checks only show on a Wi-Fi source (control module, DIG, Emlid Reach), not the simulator or Bluetooth GPS.
The screen is hard to read, the sidebar's on the wrong side, or units are wrong
Display and units settings
Fix:
- On Home, tap Settings, the fourth button down the right-hand column.
- In the DISPLAY box, next to Display Mode, tap Sunlight for bright sun or Dark for a shaded cab. The screen changes straight away.
- Next to Handedness, tap Left or Right to move the sidebar.
- Scroll down a little to the UNITS box and tap Feet + Inches, Decimal Feet or Metric. (Land Forming switches you to metric.)
- Still dim? Swipe down from the top of the screen and drag the brightness bar right (brightness).

2- Handedness. Which side the sidebar sits.
- Display Mode. Dark or Sunlight.
1- Units. Feet + Inches, Decimal Feet or Metric.
The tablet battery runs down during the day
GPS, Wi-Fi and a bright screen
Fix:
- Plug the tablet into a good 12 V cab charger and leave it plugged in all day.
- Keep power saving off: it can cut Wi-Fi. Swipe down from the top of the screen and check Power saving isn't lit (quick panel).
