Manual Grade: type a grade and go

Grade a straight slope with no survey and no design file: type the grade in the Set Grade bar, lower the blade where it should start, tap Start to lock 0+00, and chain more grades with Change Grade. Reached from Simple Grading, with the Enter Grade Only button.

  • Full Automation Kit
  • Guidance Only Kit
  • Ditch Assist Lite

In the app Home › Simple Grading › Enter Grade Only

Manual Grade is the quickest way to put a grade in: no survey, no design. Type the grade, lower the blade where the slope should start, and tap Start. That spot becomes 0+00 and the blade follows your grade as you drive away from it in a straight line. Chain different grades along a run with Change Grade.

Change Grade closes the current segment; the next Start anchors a new 0+00 where the blade is.

You open it from the Simple Grading workflow, with the Enter Grade Only button. The Excavation workflow has the same bar for excavators (Set a grade for the excavator).

Before you start

  • The tablet is on the control module's Wi-Fi (Ditch Assist Lite: the Reach hotspot), or you'll tap Simulate to practise (Connect)
  • The machine has RTK Fixed: the most accurate GPS position. The GPS button at the top of the screen shows a green RTK.
  • You know the grade and direction you want, and where the slope should start
  • Coming back to a job you started another day? Calibrate on your benchmark first (below)

Time: about 2 minutes to set the grade, then as long as the grading takes.

Set the grade and lock 0+00

Tap Simple Grading

On the Home screen, tap the Simple Grading card: top row, on the right.

  1. Simple Grading. Top row, right.

If the app isn't connected yet, the Simple Grading — Connect window opens: tap Connect (or Simulate), then Continue (Simple Grading, steps 2 and 3).

Tap Enter Grade Only

The window asks How would you like to grade? Tap Enter Grade Only, the last of the four wide buttons.

How would you like to grade? with Enter Grade Only as the fourth wide button: No survey — replicate a laser with a fixed grade 1
  1. Enter Grade Only. The last button.

You should see the Grade screen with only the map, and a Set Grade bar along the bottom. The Grade box at the top left reads — %, and Start is greyed out until a grade is set.

Tap the Target Grade % box

Target Grade % is the first box in the bar along the bottom, on the left. Tap it. A number keyboard opens, and the bar moves up above it (typing on the tablet).

Manual Grade before anything is set: grey Grade box reading dash percent, map only, Set Grade bar along the bottom with Target Grade % 0.00, Uphill and Downhill with Downhill selected, Depth Offset (in) and a greyed-out Set Grade button; Start greyed out in the right-hand column
  1. Target Grade %. Bottom left of the screen.

Type the grade

Type the grade in percent, for example 0.30. The box won't take a minus sign; you pick the direction next. 0 is allowed, for a level pad.

The Set Grade bar above the number keyboard: Target Grade 0.30 percent, Downhill selected, Depth Offset 6 inches, and a green Set Grade button
  1. Target Grade %. Here, 0.30.

Tap Downhill or Uphill

Next to the grade, tap Downhill (red: the line falls away from 0+00) or Uphill (blue: it rises). The bar remembers your last choice.

The Direction buttons in the Set Grade bar: Uphill and a red, selected Downhill
  1. Uphill and Downhill. Which way the line goes from 0+00.

Type a depth offset, if you want one

To start the line below where the blade sits at 0+00, tap the Depth Offset (in) box and type the depth, for example 6. Leave it blank for none.

The first time, a window called Name Job opens, with the keyboard.

Type a name for the job

Name Job asks for a name so you can find the job in Resume Job later. The box already holds the date and time, like Manual Grade 2026-10-17 16:29. Press and hold the keyboard's delete key to clear it, then type the field and run.

  1. Job Name. The suggested name, with the date and time.

Tap Save

Tap Save, bottom right of the window. Skip lists the job as just Manual, which is hard to tell apart later.

  1. Save. Right of Skip.

Hide the keyboard

The number keyboard may still be open. Tap the ✓ key at its bottom right to hide it.

After Save: the Grade box reads 0.30% with a down arrow, the bar's button reads Apply, and the number keyboard is still open with a tick key at its bottom right
  1. ✓ key. Bottom right of the number keyboard. Hides it.

Check the grade is set

You should see the Grade box turn red with the grade and an arrow: 0.30% ↓. The bar's button now reads Apply, Start lights up green, and a yellow Change Grade button joins the column on the right.

  2. Change Grade. For the next leg, later.

Lower the cutting edge where the slope starts

Drive to where the slope should start. Lower the cutting edge to the elevation you want at 0+00, with the tractor lever (or press and hold Lower, Full Automation Kit). On some tablets the Lower button sits partly off the bottom of the column once Change Grade appears (v1.5.4).

Tap START to lock 0+00

Check the grade and direction (the depth offset isn't shown here). While the window is open you can still set the blade exactly. Then tap START, bottom right: that position is locked as 0+00 and grading starts.

Ready to Start? 0.30% Downhill. Lower the blade to where you want grading to begin. Tapping START will lock this position as the 0+00 reference and begin grading. Cancel and START 1 2
  1. Grade and direction. Check before you lock it.
  2. START. Locks 0+00 and starts grading.

Grade the first leg

You should see the bar hide, and the Grade / Depth Guide and the chart appear. An orange pin marks this leg's 0+00 on the map: S1 · 0.30% ↓. Dist (ft) counts from 0+00. Hold, nudge and the guide work as in Grade the ditch; there's no Auto-Nudge in Manual Grade.

  1. Dist (ft). Distance from this leg's 0+00.
  2. Auto Grading Active. The blade follows the grade line.

Chain more grades: Change Grade

Tap Change Grade

Where the run bends or the grade changes, tap Change Grade, the yellow button in the column on the right. The blade stops and this leg closes where you are.

  1. Change Grade. Yellow, under Hold.

You should see the Set Grade bar come back, filled in with the last grade, direction and depth. The guide and chart hide until the next Start.

Type the next grade

Tap the Target Grade % box. It still holds the last grade: press and hold the keyboard's delete key to clear it, then type the new one, for example 0.10. Change the direction or depth too if you need to. Each leg keeps its own.

Set Grade bar edited for the next leg, shown in two rows: Target Grade 0.10, Downhill; Depth Offset 6 and a green Apply button 1

The bar is one row on the tablet; it's shown in two here.

  1. START. Locks the new leg's 0+00 and starts grading.

Keep track of the legs

You should see the Grade box read Grade · Seg 2/2: leg 2 of 2. (The picture is from a job with three legs, so it reads Seg 3/3.) Each leg's 0+00 gets its own pin on the map: orange, then blue, purple and pink. To see them all, pinch the map (pinch to zoom).

Map zoomed out on a three-leg job: Grade box Seg 3/3 0.25%, an orange S1 · 0.30% pin to the south, blue S2 and purple S3 pins near the machine with a 0+00 tag, and a cyan BM 2 benchmark flag
  1. Seg 3/3. The leg you're on, of how many.
  2. S1 pin. Leg 1's 0+00, with its grade.

The chart lays the legs end to end. Each leg starts where the blade was when you tapped START, so the line can step up or down at a leg change, not just bend.

  1. Leg changes. The line steps where a new leg started, at the blade's height then.

Tap Stop, and Start again on the same leg

Stop, the red button at the top of the column on the right, halts the blade and saves the job. The leg stays open: the bar sits above the chart and the guide stays up. Tap Start and you carry on along the same leg, same 0+00, with no Ready to Start? window. Handy for dump-and-return scraper work.

Manual Grade stopped mid-leg: Start and Reset in the right-hand column, the Set Grade bar sitting above the chart with 0.25, Downhill, 6 and Apply, the guide reading Target +15 CUT
  1. Start. Carries on along this leg straight away. Applying a change in the bar instead closes the leg; the next Start locks a new 0+00.

The Set Grade bar

FieldWhat it takes
Target Grade %Digits and one decimal point. No minus sign. 0 for a level pad. No upper limit, but 0.05–5 % covers drainage work; anything bigger is usually a typo.
Uphill / DownhillWhich way the line goes away from 0+00. The bar remembers your last choice.
Depth Offset (in) (cm in metric)How far below the blade's position at 0+00 the line starts. Positive only; blank = 0. Each leg keeps its own.
Set Grade / ApplyGreen when the grade is 0 or more and the offset is blank or 0 or more. Applying while a leg is open closes it.

Tips

  • Use Depth Offset, not nudge, to start below the ground. Type the depth in the bar before Start rather than tapping Nudge Down a dozen times after.
  • Anchoring at a known elevation: set the blade on it while Ready to Start? is open, then tap START.
  • Wrong spot for 0+00? Start a new leg where you are (Chain more grades), or tap Reset and begin again.
  • No cut/fill map: Manual Grade has no survey, so there's no coverage colouring or cut/fill preview. Want those? Survey first in Simple Grading.
  • On some tablets the Lower button sits partly off the bottom of the right-hand column once Change Grade appears (v1.5.4).

Start checks

  • Start needs a fix: No GPS fix or GPS: STALE — position not updating otherwise.
  • The Manual Grade Reference Distance Warning setting (in Settings, under Pre-Start Safety; 16 ft unless you change it) can warn Far From Reference Point when you start a long way from 0+00: the target there is shifted by distance × grade. Tap Cancel, and start a new leg here with Change Grade if that's what you meant.
  • The Elevation Mismatch Check (off unless you turn it on) warns when the target is far from where the blade is.

Come back to the job later

Every Stop and Change Grade saves the job. To carry on another day, open Simple Grading and tap Resume Job (or tap Resume on an empty Grade screen, Resume a job).

  1. Tap Resume Job

In How would you like to grade?, tap Resume Job, the third wide button. A window called Resume Job opens.

    1. Resume Job. The third button.
  2. Tap Resume on your job

Manual Grade jobs end in (Manual). Resuming and grading a job can add a second entry with the same name in v1.5.4: pick the one with the latest Saved time. Tap the orange Resume button on its row.

Resume Job window: West road ditch (Manual), Saved Fri Oct 16 10:08 PM, Manual, 1431 cells at the top, then Ditching and Excavator jobs, each with an orange Resume button
    1. Your job. Name, then (Manual), and when it was saved.
    2. Resume. Reloads every leg and its 0+00.
  3. Tap Calibrate, or Skip

A window called Calibrate GPS? appears. Each leg's 0+00 was locked on the elevations of the day you set it. On a new day, or if the base was moved or restarted, tap Calibrate and calibrate on your benchmark (how). Same day, same base setup: tap Skip.

Calibrate GPS? window over the resumed Manual Grade job, with Skip and Calibrate buttons at its bottom right
    1. Skip and Calibrate. Bottom right of the window.
  4. Tap Start

You should see the legs back on the chart and the Grade box reading where you left off, for example Seg 3/3. Tap Start: you carry on along the last leg.

Resumed Manual Grade job: Grade box Seg 3/3, three legs on the chart, a green Start button in the right-hand column, and a blank Set Grade bar above the chart
    1. Seg 3/3. Where you left off.
    2. Start. Carries on along leg 3.

After a resume the Set Grade bar is blank, not filled with the last leg's values. To start a new leg instead, fill the bar in, tap Apply, then Start.

On each kit

  • Full Automation Kit: as described.
  • Guidance Only Kit: nothing moves by itself; follow the guide with the tractor lever.
  • Ditch Assist Lite: the same steps; Ready to Start? locks 0+00 and you move the blade. No Hold, Raise or Lower. Working in Ditch Assist Lite.

If something goes wrong

  • Set Grade won't turn green, or won't take a minus: type a positive grade and pick Downhill; clear a negative depth.
  • Start greyed out: no grade set yet, or not connected. More.
  • Line is off by the same amount on a resumed job: calibrate on your benchmark. More.
  • Reset cleared my legs: the job is still saved. Use Resume.
  • HOLD banners: Grading holds by itself.
