Jobs, saving and resuming

How the app saves surveys, designs and grading jobs in every workflow, what saves itself and when, how things are named, the two Resume Job lists, starting fresh without losing anything, where the files live, and the benchmark rule for coming back another day.

The app keeps three kinds of work, and they're saved differently. You save surveys and designs when you make them. Jobs, the record of your grading, save themselves. Nothing is lost when you reset, change workflow or close the app; you pick a job up again with Resume.

Survey, design, grade, save and resume The loop every surface job follows, top to bottom. 1 Survey: drive the route and the app records the ground. Blade height plugs in here: it is only used while you survey. 2 Design: Slope-IQ or the workflow's design window builds the target grade. 3 Grade: the blade is worked to the target, automatically with a Full Automation Kit or by following the guide. 4 Save and resume: the job saves itself when you stop. An arrow loops from Save and resume back to Grade: on another day, calibrate on the benchmark first, then keep grading. Survey, design, grade 1 Survey Blade height 2 Design 3 Grade 4 Save & resume Next day: calibrate first
Every surface job runs the same loop: survey, design, grade, and pick it up again another day. The survey and design are saved as you make them; the job saves itself when you stop.

Before you start

  • Nothing to set up: saving is built in. Surveys and designs save when you name them; jobs save themselves.
  • To come back to a job, it must have been graded and stopped at least once.

Time: about 5 minutes to read. Resuming a job takes about 2 minutes, plus calibrating if you need to.

What's saved, and when

KindHoldsSaved whenNamed
SurveyThe ground along the route you droveYou tap Save in the Save Survey? windowWhat you type. Default: date and time, plus the workflow (Survey 10-16 2141 (Ditching)).
DesignThe target grade built from a surveySave & Implement (Slope-IQ™, tile, terrace); automatically on Apply Design (Simple Grade)Survey name plus workflow (South 40 main ditch (Ditching)). Simple Grade: Simple 0.20% downhill (Simple Grading). A used name gets V2, V3.

Manual Grade: the name from Name Job plus (Manual).

While a job saves you'll see Saving job… for a second or two on long jobs. Let it finish before you switch the tablet off.

The two Resume Job lists

WhereShows
Resume Job in a workflow's start choices (Simple Grading, Terracing, Land Forming, Excavation)Jobs from that workflow. Simple Grading's list includes Manual Grade jobs.
Resume on the Grade screen, when nothing is loadedJobs from every workflow. Check the type in brackets. This is the way in for Ditching, Tiling and the other workflows with no Resume Job in their start choices.

Each row shows the name, when it was last saved, the type, when it was created and how much coverage it holds, with Resume and a delete button. Nothing saved yet reads No saved jobs: jobs save when you stop grading.

Resume Job from the Grade screen: South 40 main ditch (Ditching) (Slope-IQ) followed by Excavator jobs, each with Resume and delete
  1. Grade-screen list. Every workflow: check the type in brackets.
Resume Job from Simple Grading's start choices: a Simple Grade job and two Manual jobs
  1. Workflow list. Simple Grading and Manual Grade only.

In v1.5.4 the same job can appear twice (for example after resuming a Manual Grade or Leveling job and grading again). Pick the one with the latest Saved time.

Coming back tomorrow

Every tap, with a picture for each: Resume a job. In short:

  • Ditching, Tiling and the others: there's no resume button in the start window. You open the Grade screen with nothing loaded and use its orange Resume button.
  • Simple Grading, Terracing, Land Forming, Excavation: tap Resume Job in the workflow's start window.
  • Then: tap Resume on your job. Calibrate GPS? appears: on another day, or if the base moved, tap Calibrate and calibrate on the field's benchmark (the button reads Calibrate to BM 2 (5s avg) with your benchmark's name; hold still 5 seconds; the status line then reads Calibrated to benchmark). Same day, same base: Skip.
  • Auto-Nudge: the job comes back with coverage, worked surface, nudge and pass. Enable Auto-Nudge with the same Max Cut Per Pass keeps your pass; Use Manual Nudge puts it back to 1. Then tap Start.

The benchmark rule for coming back

Every job, survey and design is in the elevations of the base setup it was made on. Set the base up again, or move it, or restart it, and today's raw readings are all shifted by the same amount. Calibrating on a benchmark takes that shift out.

  • Same day, same base setup, nothing moved: no calibration. Tap Skip if the Calibrate GPS? window appears.
  • Any other day, or the base was moved, set up again, replaced or rebooted: calibrate before the first pass. Day two of a ditch, next spring's cleanout, a three-day forming job (every morning), a base that blew over.
  • One benchmark per field, set the first time you work it: field entrance, culvert headwall, fence corner. Use it for everything in that field, year after year.
  • No benchmark from last time? Calibrate on the loaded survey or design at a spot that hasn't been touched since. Never on ground you've already cut; on a stretch already at grade, use Design grade in the Loaded design row.
Do I need to calibrate today? A decision flow. Question: are you working the same day and on the same base setup as the survey or design? Yes: no benchmark is needed, grade straight away, for example a ditch surveyed and dug the same day with the base untouched. No: calibrate first if you are coming back another day, the job runs over several days, it is next year’s cleanout, the base was moved, set up again or rebooted, or the design comes from an older survey. To calibrate on the field’s benchmark: 1, drive to the benchmark, such as the field entrance; 2, tap the BM badge in the top bar, which is grey or orange; 3, lower the cutting edge onto the benchmark and hold still; 4, tap Calibrate to, then the benchmark name, 5s avg, and the app averages 5 seconds; 5, read the Calibrate sheet status line: Calibrated to, with a green tick, means you can work. No benchmark yet? Calibrate on an undisturbed point of the loaded survey or design, never on ground you have cut, then tap Set Benchmark here for next time. The BM badge is grey when not calibrated and orange when a calibration is applied, whether done today or restored after a restart, so read the status line: green Calibrated to, this session, work; orange Restored from a date, recalibrate before working; grey Not calibrated, raw GPS elevations. Do I need to calibrate today? Only when you come back to an older survey, design or job, or the base has moved. Same day on the same base setup: no calibration needed.

The BM badge: grey not calibrated, orange a calibration is applied. Tap it to see which: the status line reads Calibrated to … for this session or Restored from <date> for last session's offset (recalibrate). The app asks Calibrate GPS? whenever a survey, design or job comes off the tablet (Load Survey, Load Design, Resume), once per file per session; it can't tell whether the base has moved, so Skip it on the same base setup. With Field Mode on and today's calibration done on the field's benchmark, it stays quiet for files that were made on that same benchmark and asks for any other file; it also reminds you to calibrate as you enter a field (Field Mode). Every method: Benchmarks and calibration.

Start fresh without losing anything

Reset (Reset All?), tapping the active workflow card (Start New Session?) and Change Mode (Change Mode?) all clear what's loaded: the survey, design, grading progress and coverage. None of them deletes a saved survey, design or job. Which one to use.

Delete what you don't need

Surveys and designs are deleted from the Load window (Load button on the Survey screen, or Load Survey / Load Design in a workflow's start window). Jobs are deleted from the Resume Job window. Deleting can't be undone.

  1. Tap the bin on the row

Each row ends with a bin button, right of its Load or Implement button. Tap the bin on the one you want to delete.

Load window, Designs tab: South 40 main ditch (Ditching) V2 and the original, each with Edit, Implement and a bin button, a satellite preview of the selected design, and Import design file (XYZP)
    1. Versions. V2 is the revised design; the original stays.
    2. Bin. Deletes the row, after asking.
  2. Tap Delete

A window asks first: Delete Survey?, Delete Design? or Delete Job?, with the name and This cannot be undone. Tap Delete (red, bottom right), or Cancel to keep it.

Delete Survey? Delete "Recovered 2026-10-17 15:55"? This cannot be undone. Cancel and Delete 1
    1. Delete. Bottom right.

Where the files live

Everything is in Documents/DitchAssist/ on the tablet: surveys/, designs/ and jobs/, each in a folder per day. Exports go in exports/. Back these folders up, and copy them to a new tablet to bring your work with you.

If something goes wrong

  • A job or survey is missing from the list: More.
  • Nothing saves, or the lists are empty after a reinstall: storage permission. More.
  • Resumed and everything is off by the same amount: calibrate. More.
  • The app asks to calibrate every time I load: More.
