Survey a whole field (Field Survey)

Field Survey records elevations across a whole field for contours or your land-forming design software. Drop a benchmark, Start, drive the field, Pause and Log Point Here as you need, Finish & Save, and use it now or later. Resume a survey on another day, or export it as CSV, TSV, XYZ, KML, Shapefile or LandXML.

In the app Levee › Survey New Field / Drive to Map; Forming › Survey Field; Tiling › Survey Whole Field

Field Survey is for elevations over a whole area, not along one line: you drive the field back and forth and the app logs a point every Recording Interval. The result feeds contours in Levee, Contour Tiling and Contour-Guided Terracing, or goes out as a file to your land-forming design software.

A line survey for a ditch, terrace or tile run is a different screen: Survey a route.

Where you open it

WorkflowButtonSaved as
LeveeSurvey New Field (wizard or panel), sidebar Drive to Maplevee_name.json
Contour Tiling / Contour-Guided TerracingSurvey New Field on the field-surface choosercontour_name.json
Land FormingSurvey Fieldforming_name.json
Tiling (Standard)Survey Whole Fieldtile_name.json

The screen is the same everywhere; small grey words in the bar across the top, left of the GPS button, say which workflow it's for ("for levee").

Before you start

  • RTK Fixed. Only RTK points are logged while RTK Filter is on.
  • Any connection works for surveying: control module, Reach, DIG™ module or a Bluetooth GPS
  • A spot you can find again for the benchmark: gate corner, culvert headwall, fence corner
  • Recording Interval (in Settings, under SURVEY; 10 ft by default) set to how close you want points

Time: 2 minutes to set up; the drive takes as long as the field (roughly the time to spray it at your pass spacing).

Record the field

Park on the benchmark spot, tap Start

The screen opens ready but not recording: the grey banner reads Armed — tap Start in sidebar to record. Park on the spot you picked for the benchmark, implement on the ground. Tap Start at the top of the right-hand column. On a new survey the app first asks for a benchmark: Drop a benchmark first.

Field Survey armed: 0 pts, chip for levee, grey banner Armed — tap Start in sidebar to record; sidebar Start, Benchmark (0), Swath: 40 ft, Set A, Cancel
  1. Armed. Nothing is logged yet.
  2. Start. Tap it.

Tap Drop Benchmark Here

It's the right-hand button in the Drop a benchmark first window. Drop Benchmark opens, asking for a name.

The buttons of the Drop a benchmark first window: Not yet and Drop Benchmark Here 1
  1. Drop Benchmark Here. Tap it.

Type a name for the benchmark

Tap the Benchmark name box and type a name you'll know next year: "Gate corner" beats BM-1 (typing).

Drop Benchmark: Benchmark name Gate corner, Cancel and Next: Average 1
  1. Benchmark name. Type it here.

Tap Next: Average and hold still

Next: Average is at the bottom right. Keep the machine still for the 5-second average (Hold position — averaging).

  1. Next: Average. Tap it, then hold still for 5 seconds.

Check the benchmark is in, then tap Start

A flag appears on the map, the chip at the top left reads 1 BM and the button reads Benchmark (1). Tap Start again: now it records.

Field Survey after dropping the benchmark: 0 pts and 1 BM top left, a flag on the map, sidebar Start, Benchmark (1), Swath: 40 ft, Set A, Cancel
  1. 0 pts · 1 BM. The benchmark is in.
  2. Start and Benchmark (1). Tap Start.

Drive the field

The banner reads Recording and breadcrumb dots follow you, one every Recording Interval; the count at the top left climbs. Drive back and forth like mowing or spraying, passes evenly spaced, edges included. An AB line keeps the passes straight (AB-line passes).

Recording: 56 pts and 1 BM top left, banner Recording, breadcrumbs on the map; sidebar Pause, Log Point Here, Benchmark (1), Swath: 120 ft, Set A, Finish & Save (56), Cancel
  1. 56 pts · 1 BM. Points logged so far.
  2. Recording. Logging as you drive.

If RTK drops, logging stops until it's back (Waiting for RTK fix — recording paused) and you'll see a gap in the trail. Drive back over gaps with RTK Fixed.

For a low spot or corner, tap Log Point Here

Log Point Here is the second button in the right-hand column. It adds one point right where you are, for a low spot, an inlet or a corner between passes. A message at the bottom confirms it: Point logged (26 total). It still needs a good fix (Waiting for an accurate RTK fix — point not logged.).

  1. Log Point Here. Tap it.

To cross a road or headland, tap Pause

Pause is at the top of the right-hand column. Logging stops and the button becomes Resume; tap it to carry on.

When the field is covered, tap Finish & Save

Finish & Save shows the point count, for example Finish & Save (56). It needs at least 10 points (Fewer than 10 points — keep driving or Cancel.). Save Field Survey opens.

Type the survey name

Tap the Survey name box and type the field's name (typing). The line above shows the file it will save as.

Save Field Survey: 59 points collected, Saved as: levee_<name>.json, Survey name North 40 levee, Discard, Save & Return, Save & Use Now 1
  1. Survey name. Use the field name.

Tap Save & Return or Save & Use Now

The two right-hand buttons at the bottom of the window both save. Save & Return, the white one in the middle, saves and takes you back to the workflow (Survey saved: levee_north_40_levee.json). Save & Use Now, the wide green one on the right, saves and goes straight on to the contours. Discard, the white button on the far left, throws the points away.

The two save buttons at the bottom of Save Field Survey: Save & Return (white) and Save & Use Now (green) 1 2
  1. Save & Return. Saves; back to the workflow.
  2. Save & Use Now. Saves and goes straight on (contours, from Levee).

Save & Use Now is offered from Levee and the contour workflows. From Land Forming and Tiling the survey is for export, so the window has Discard and a single Save.

Calibrate to the benchmark on another day

Park on the benchmark, tap Benchmark

Park on the benchmark spot, implement on the ground, as when you dropped it. Tap Benchmark (1), under Start / Resume in the right-hand column. The Benchmark menu opens.

Field Survey with Benchmark (1) second in the right-hand column
  1. Benchmark (1). Tap it.

Tap your benchmark's row

The menu lists the benchmarks with their elevation and date. Tap the one you're parked on, then hold still for the 5-second average. Drop New Benchmark Here adds another instead.

Benchmark: Drop a new benchmark at your current position, or calibrate to one you dropped previously. Existing benchmarks (tap to calibrate): Gate corner, Elev 794.156 ft • dropped date; Cancel and Drop New Benchmark Here 2
  1. Existing benchmark. Tap to calibrate to it.
  2. Drop New Benchmark Here.

You have to be parked on it: farther than 10 m and it says You are … from "Gate corner". Drive within 10 m to calibrate. The difference is applied to every point you log from then on, so today's points line up with the original survey.

Add to a saved survey, or export it

Tap the survey in the list

When saved field surveys exist, opening Field Survey asks Resume or export existing survey. Show only levee surveys (or the workflow you came from) filters the list. Tap the survey's row. Start Fresh Survey starts a new one instead.

Resume or export existing survey: Pick a saved survey to resume collecting points or export it for design software. Or start a fresh survey. Show only levee surveys checkbox, North 40 levee 59 pts • 1 session(s) • date, Cancel and Start Fresh Survey 2
  1. A saved survey. Points, sessions, date.
  2. Start Fresh Survey.

Tap Resume survey

Survey actions opens with Resume survey at the top. Tap it to keep adding points. To export instead, tap one of the seven formats listed under it: CSV, TSV, XYZ (space or semicolon), KML, Shapefile ZIP or LandXML, in WGS84 with elevations in metres. Exports go to Documents/DitchAssist/exports with a Share button (Export a survey).

  1. Resume survey. Tap it to keep adding points.
  2. Export formats. Listed under it.

Calibrate if the base moved, then tap Resume

The survey opens with its earlier points (with a gap where you stopped last time) and its benchmarks, so the whole field stays in one elevation frame. If the base has moved or restarted since, calibrate first (above). Then tap Resume at the top of the right-hand column and carry on driving.

Resumed survey: 59 pts and 1 BM, earlier breadcrumbs on the map with a gap where logging stopped, sidebar Resume, Benchmark (1), Swath, Set A, Finish & Save (59), Cancel
  1. 59 pts · 1 BM. Carried over.
  2. Resume and Benchmark (1). Calibrate first if the base moved, then tap Resume.

Cancel and leaving the screen

  • Cancel with 10 or more points on screen asks Discard N unsaved points? Keep working or Discard. The message says "Tap Stop instead if you want to save": that means Finish & Save. With fewer than 10 points Cancel leaves straight away and drops them without asking.
  • On a survey you resumed, the count includes the points that were already saved (17 saved + 6 new reads "Discard 23 unsaved points?"). Discard only drops the points added since you resumed; the saved survey stays as it was.
  • Tapping Home mid-survey is blocked: Finish field survey first. Use Finish & Save, or Cancel to discard.
The two buttons at the bottom right of the Discard 43 unsaved points? window: Keep working (green writing) and Discard (dark red) 1 2
  1. Keep working. Back to the survey; then Finish & Save.
  2. Discard. The dark-red button. Throws this session's points away.
