Files won't save, load, import or export
Saved surveys or jobs are missing, an export fails, an imported file is refused, or a map overlay won't load or disappears. Start with the storage permission and the file type.

In the app Android Settings › Apps › Ditch Assist › Permissions; Load; Map Layers
Ditch Assist® keeps everything under Documents/DitchAssist/ on the tablet: surveys, designs, jobs, benchmarks, LiDAR fields and logs. It needs Android's All files access to read and write there. If that permission was refused, often after a reinstall, the app falls back to private storage and your files seem to vanish.
Before you start
- Have the tablet in your hand. Some fixes are in the tablet's own Settings app (the grey gear icon), not in Ditch Assist: where it is.
- Know the name of the file and where it came from (email, USB, the owner portal).
Time: 2 minutes for the permission fix. A few minutes for file problems.
Quick checks first
- Ditch Assist is allowed All files access in Android (how to check).
- In the Load list, All fields is picked, not just the active field.
- The file is a type the screen accepts (for example .kml, not .kmz; XYZ, XYZP or AGD for designs).
Find your symptom
Tap the line that matches what you see. It opens with the causes, most likely first. Check tells you how to spot the cause. Fix tells you what to do, one step at a time.
Saves fail, or saved files have disappeared“Export failed. Check storage permission.”
All files access isn't allowed Most likely
Check: While the permission is off, Ditch Assist opens Android's All files access page by itself every time it starts. If you've been tapping Back past that page, this is your problem. There's no storage button inside the app.
Fix, the quick way:
- Close Ditch Assist fully (how to close an app).
- Open Ditch Assist again. Android's All files access page opens.
- Tap the switch next to Allow access to manage all files, on the right. It turns on.
- Tap the back arrow at the top left. Ditch Assist carries on starting up.
- Allow access to manage all files. The row in the middle of the page.
- The switch. Off (grey) here. Tap it to turn it on.
- Back arrow. Takes you back into Ditch Assist.
Or from the tablet's Settings app (Samsung):
- Open the tablet's Settings app.
- Tap Apps.
- Tap Ditch Assist.
- Tap Permissions.
- Tap Files and media.
- Choose Allow management of all files.
- Close Ditch Assist fully and open it again.
On other tablets the setting sits in a different place: in the Settings app, tap Apps, then look for Special app access and, inside it, All files access. The quick way above works on every tablet.
The tablet is full
Check: In the tablet's Settings app, look at the storage. Export failed: …
or Save failed: …
with the permission allowed usually means no space.
Fix: Free up space (old LiDAR fields and cached imagery take the most) and try again.
A survey or design you saved isn't in the Load list
Field Mode shows only the active field Most likely
Check: The list says No surveys in …
and Tap "All fields" above to see every saved survey.
Fix: Tap All fields, the second choice in the row at the top of the list, next to your field's name. See Field Mode.
- All fields. Shows every saved survey, not just the active field's.
Storage permission
It's a contour tile or terrace design
Check: Tapping Implement says Contour tile design — use the wizard
or Terrace design — use the wizard
.
Fix: These need their survey pieces loaded together, so they open from their own workflow card. If the Connect window opens first, connect and tap Continue. Contour tile design:
- On the Home screen, tap the Tiling card.
- Under Tiling Method, tap Contour Tiling.
- Tap Load Existing Design.
Terrace design:
- On the Home screen, tap the Terracing card.
- Under Terracing Method, tap Standard Terracing.
- Tap Load Surveys and pick the channel and berm surveys. Or tap Resume Job to carry on a job.
A contour tile job you already started also comes back from the Resume button on the Grade screen.
The list won't open“Error loading data” · “Error loading jobs”
A saved file couldn't be read
Check: The small red text under the message is the technical reason.
Fix:
- Close the window and open it again.
- If it keeps failing, write down the red text.
- Send your logs and call support.
Where are my files? I want them on a PC
Documents/DitchAssist on the tablet
Check:
- Open the tablet's My Files app.
- Tap Documents.
- Tap DitchAssist. Logs are in logs, LiDAR fields in lidar-fields.
Fix:
- Plug the tablet into a PC with a USB cable.
- On the tablet, allow file transfer when it asks.
- On the PC, copy the whole DitchAssist folder.
To send one survey to design software, use the export (share) button on the survey's row in the Load list: XYZ or KML. See Move files on and off the tablet.
An imported survey or design line is refused“Import failed: …”
Wrong format Most likely
Check: Open the file in a text editor. The line importers want latitude, longitude, elevation (XYZ), or latitude, longitude, survey elevation, proposed elevation (XYZP), in decimal degrees, separated by tabs, commas, semicolons or spaces. The file needs at least two points with valid coordinates.
means fewer than two rows could be read.
Fix: Export again in that layout, for example from Geo-Surface™. Land Forming files: see Land Forming problems.
Wrong workflow
Check: The app says File import is not available for this workflow. Use Ditching, Excavation or Tiling.
Fix: Go to Home, open Ditching, Excavation or Tiling, and import there.
A survey export fails“Export failed: …” · “Could not load survey data for export.”
Storage permission or space Most likely
Fix: Check the permission and free space (steps), then export again.
The survey file is damaged
Check: Could not load survey data for export.
shows for one survey only, or its preview says No points to display
.
Fix: Try another survey. Send logs if a survey you need won't open.
A KML or KMZ won't load as a map layer“Failed to parse KML: …” · “No features found in KML file”
It's a KMZ Most likely
Check: The file name ends in .kmz. Add KML takes .kml files only; other files show greyed out in the picker.
Fix: On a PC, rename the .kmz to .zip, open it, copy out doc.kml and import that.
Nothing in it to draw
Fix: Export the KML again with its lines, points or polygons included.
An image overlay won't load“No world file found. Select the image (.jpg) and world file (.jgw) together, or a .zip containing both.”
The world file is missing Most likely
Fix: pick the picture and its world file together.
- Tap the layers button on the map: the round button with stacked squares, at the bottom right of the map. The Map Layers window opens.
- Tap + at its top right.
- Tap Add Image Overlay. The tablet's file picker opens.
- Press and hold the picture (.jpg) until it's ticked (long-press).
- Tap its world file (.jgw) so both are ticked. Or pick one .zip that holds both.
- Tap Select.
1
2- Add Image Overlay. A picture plus its world file, or one .zip with both.
- Add KML. .kml files only.
No image file found…
means the picture itself wasn't picked.
The world file is in metres
Check: The app says World file uses projected coordinates (UTM/meters). Only WGS84 (EPSG:4326) geographic coordinates are supported. Re-export the world file in lat/lon.
Fix: Export the picture and world file again in WGS84 latitude/longitude.
The file isn't on the tablet itself
Check: The app says Image file not accessible: …
Fix: Copy the files into Downloads on the tablet and pick them from there. See Import a map overlay.
Overlays you added are gone after restarting the app
Overlays aren't kept between sessions in v1.5.4
Check: Image overlays (a .jpg/.jgw pair, or a zipped overlay such as an owner-portal map.zip) and KML layers added with the + in Map Layers last until the app closes. LiDAR & Mapping fields and drainage plans are saved and stay.
Fix: Add them again each session. Keep the files in Downloads so they're quick to pick.
