Auto-grading the trench
Tiling chapter of the Ditch Assist app manual. The same text is in the app under Manual.
In the app Manual › Tiling › Auto-grading the trench
The Grade screen for Tiling looks like Ditching but with a few differences:
- The profile chart shows the black tile line, not a green ditch line.
- Auto-Nudge is hidden — Tiling is single-pass.
- The Auto Nudge indicator is suppressed.
To start trenching:
- Drive to the outlet end of the tile line.
- Lower the trencher / chain trencher / plow to the design depth at the outlet (use the Final Target reading in the stats bar to position).
- Tap Start in the sidebar.
- Drive uphill at trenching speed. The blade follows the tile profile automatically.
The Start depth gate (Tiling only)
The Start button stays disabled until the blade is at or below the design target depth (about 1″ tolerance) at your current position — it turns green once you're at depth. While the blade is still above target, a live hint chip under the Start button reads Lower X″ to start (metric: Lower X cm to start), or Waiting for RTK fix when there's no fix yet. If Start is somehow tapped while above target, an orange SnackBar reads Blade must reach target depth before starting. Currently X above target. Starting from a position outside the design's projected extent is refused with GPS is outside the tile design extent. Move closer to the design before starting. The simulator skips the depth gate. The same gate applies to the Contour Tiling install, since it runs in the same tiling mode.
The chevrons
Same as Ditching:
- Up arrows → tile line is below current position (going deeper).
- Down arrows → tile line is above current position (coming up).
- Center → on the tile line.
Hold and release
Tap Hold when you need to stop sending commands but stay in tile mode (e.g. crossing a road, lifting over a service line). Tap Release to resume. Auto-hold engages on RTK loss.
Stop
Tap Stop at the inlet end. The job auto-saves. The design also saves the sticky parameters you used so the next tile job starts with similar values.
Nudge
Manual Nudge works in Tiling — ±2″ per tap, effectively unlimited range (±999″). Use it to lift the tile a bit through a known soft spot, or to drop it briefly into a low. (The rock-hit auto-nudge is separate and stays clamped at ±24″.)
